Why you need to tie raspberries
A neat raspberry looks much better than dense thickets. In addition, it is much easier to harvest in it. But aesthetics and convenience are far from the main advantages of the procedure. Tied and ordered raspberry bushes suffer less from diseases and pests. Thanks to uniform illumination, the ovaries will turn out more, and the berries will be larger. The support will protect the stems from breaking off. And it will become easier for insects to pollinate flowers.
Autumn tying also has its own meaning. Bushes prepared for winter will not break under a heavy snow cover and will be reliably protected from strong winds.
When to tie raspberries
It is best to do this in early spring – before the buds begin to wake up. Usually the beginning of the season for summer residents is a troublesome time. Therefore, if suddenly you did not have time to tie up the raspberries in a sleeping state, do it at least before the bushes begin to release buds.
You can tie up raspberries in the fall, after the end of fruiting. It is important to cope here before the onset of frosts and snowfalls.
How to tie raspberries to stakes
This method is considered the simplest and is suitable if for some reason you do not have the time or desire to make more serious designs.
Drive a support about 2 m high into the center of the raspberry bush so that it is firmly held in the ground. You can use a wooden stake, a piece of rebar, a plastic or metal pipe. Collect the shoots in a bundle around the support and tie them to it at a height of about 1.5 m with a rope, twine or piece of cloth. Ready!
But if you have a bit of enthusiasm, it is better to choose a more labor-intensive method. The round method has significant drawbacks. In a large bunch, the branches are poorly ventilated and, in high humidity, can pick up fungal diseases. A thickened crown can become a secluded breeding ground for pests. In addition, the ovaries in the depth of the beam will lack sunlight, which means that the berries will turn out to be small.
How to tie raspberries in a trellis way
Suitable for raspberries growing in rows. From one edge to the other, drive 2-meter posts into the ground (all the same wooden stakes, rebar, plastic or metal pipes) in increments of 3 m. The supports should be on the same line. Then pull a wire or strong twine over them in two rows parallel to the ground: the first is a meter from the soil surface, the second is another half a meter higher.
Evenly distribute the raspberry branches and tie them to the upper and lower tiers with a rope.
How to tie a raspberry in a fan way
Despite the simplicity of the process, this method is considered very effective. Between the raspberry bushes, you need to drive in supports about 2 m high – wooden stakes, fittings, pieces of plastic and metal pipes will do. Divide each bush into two parts: one is tied to the left column, the second to the right. The stems are attached to the supports with a slight bend. When you put the whole raspberry in order in this way, it will look like a big fan.
